The next installment of the Dailies:PORTAL Film Exchange Project screens at the Goethe Zentrum at Colony Square in Midtown tonight. New works from Germany, Poland, Russia and Austin, Texas.

WHAT: Dailies:PORTAL Screening

WHEN: 6:30-8pm, discussion to follow
ENTRY: FREE (park beneath and bring ticket up for validation), donations for beer and wine

"DAILIES has had 5 screenings in Berlin and Munich. We always a big crowd and great discussion. We believe in an equal exchange -- our artists showing there and theirs showing here 50/50.

DAILIES will have more screenings in 2009. We also have a co-production film project beginning between Atlanta and Berlin.

This is a perfect time to join in the discussion.

The Goethe Institute funds travel for several filmmakers each year. The discussion after the screenings helps them understand the interest in our filmmakers for working outside Atlanta. Goethe is not just a German Cultural institution, but is a global network with branches in most major cities world wide (5 in America). They support work in each of the hundreds of cities world wide.

The hope of the Dailies PORTAL exchange is not to immediately like each others films, but to see if a dialogue is possible.

The challenge is to work to find shared needs and strengths -- ways to work together. It's hard and requires open minds on both sides, but it is well worth the effort. We hope that two of the filmmakers you will see tonight will be working with us in Atlanta this next year." -----

...is International Animation Day. ASIFA - an international animation organization - has chapters all over the world that exchange work and screen it today in celebration of contemporary animated film. If you haven't reserved your free seats, show up to ASIFA-Atlanta's event tonight at the HIGH, and there are likely to be some extra seats. Screenings at 7 and 9pm.

I've been reviewing some history, notes, and functions of this blog, and will be doing some restructuring. In doing this, I realized that some of the on-going film nights and related events have died. That's sad. I'm interested in what people think about these events and any ideas you might have as to why they died off. Hey everyone - our friend and fellow filmmaker Michael McReynolds suffered a bike accident recently. Unfortunately, he remembers nothing from the time right before the impact to when he awoke busted-up in his bed the next morning. His bike that he built, his new MacAir, his iphone, and glasses are all gone. Someone gave him a ride home. He's spent the last few weeks on a liquid diet with his mouth wired shut, and sporting a shoulder brace that resembles a gun holster. Although he's in good spirits and looking mighty fine in his short shorts, he's got a mean stack of hospital bills. Come out, see some killer live performances, hang out with all of us, and help support the McRick. Only $5. Show some love.

Dragon*Con

is fun. It is easy to wander around unnoticed and flood your eyes with amazing. You won't get into any cool panels or events without a pass, though. Just two more days of glory. The party peaks tonight. For more info, visit the Dragon*Con website.

Come buy my stuff! My house got hit in the tornado, and my new place is smaller and bills really suck, so I'm getting rid of a ton of cool stuff. MINT Gallery will be there selling fresh art on the cheap, and more. A local rescue group will be there at noon for you to meet their furry friends as well. international artist exchange, where creators travel overseas
and engage in critical discussion of creative works.
Each weekend in May, a new program is screened.

Bobb Lovett - local filmmaker and photographer, and curator of the recent Pullman Yard Show - is having his first solo art show tonight at Octane Coffee Bar & Lounge on the westside. An ardent traveler and explorer, he has spent the last 5 years uncovering and photographing some of Atlanta's overlooked and forgotten spaces. Here, his approach appears less as documentary, and more like portraiture. Though many of the photos are of derelect or decrepit buildings and spaces, they carry a real sense of warmth and comfort, much like home. In This is MY Atlanta, Bobb shares with us his urban exploration of and love for Atlanta.

THIS THURSDAY, MAY 1, 8PM at the New Street Gallery:
City Lights (Charlie Chaplin, 1931 / 87 minutes, Silent BW)

Often cited as Chaplin's best movie as well as one of the best movies of all time, City Lights is a tender love story between the Tramp and a blind girl (Virginia Cherrill). As with all of Chaplin's films, there is no shortage of slapstick humor and perfect comedic timing here. But the real brilliance of the movie is how emotionally relevant and resonant it still is today. A perfect blend of the tragic and the comic unique only to Chaplin, it slowly builds into one of the most memorable endings in cinematic history.

Cinemama is a film series featuring films every Thursday 8PM at the New
Street Gallery. Everyone is invited! There will be POPCORN, DRINKS, and SOFT FLUFFY PILLOWS. This is a FREE event, although donations are welcome.
